1882 U.S. $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle Gold Coin Denomination: $5 Half Eagle Year: 1882 Mint: Philadelphia (no mintmark, unless specified with "S" for San Francisco, "CC" for Carson City, or "O" for New Orleans if applicable) Composition: 90% Gold, 10% Copper Weight: 8.359 grams (0.2419 troy oz actual gold weight) Diameter: 21.6 mm Obverse Design: Features Lady Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with the word “LIBERTY,” surrounded by 13 stars with the date below. Reverse Design: Displays a heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows, with the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and denomination “FIVE D.” Designer: Christian Gobrecht Historical Note: Part of the Liberty Head “Coronet” series minted from 1839 to 1908, a popular and widely collected U.S. gold issue.
