1923 $1 Silver Certificate “Funnyback” Note, cataloged as Fr. 237, and graded Choice Very Fine 35 by PCGS Banknote. This popular large-size type features the distinctive ornate reverse design that collectors nicknamed the “Funnyback.” Issued during the final years of large-size U.S. currency, these notes remain one of the most widely collected early Silver Certificates. The note displays strong mid-grade detail with excellent eye appeal for the grade, including solid paper integrity and well-defined printing. The design elements remain bold, and the note retains pleasing color throughout. Moderate circulation is visible, consistent with the Choice Very Fine 35 grade. Signature combination Speelman / White appears on this desirable large-size issue. 1929 $10 National Bank Note issued by the First National Bank of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Charter No. 252. This is a Type 1 small-size National Bank Note, featuring the classic portrait of Alexander Hamilton on the face and the detailed engraving of the bank building on the reverse. The note displays brown charter numbers, a blue Treasury seal, and matching serial numbers, all consistent with the issue. Charter number “252” is clearly visible at the top and bottom of the face, confirming the Pittsburgh issuance. These notes were produced in limited quantities and remain popular with both national bank collectors and Pennsylvania specialists. Despite its circulation wear, this example retains strong eye appeal, legible details, and solid authenticity. It’s an honest, original note with character, not one of those suspiciously “too clean” miracles. Grade (estimated): Very Good (VG) Paper Quality: Well-circulated with moderate softness Folds: Multiple vertical and horizontal folds, including center folds Edges: Slightly rough with minor wear, no major pieces missing Corners: Rounded from circulation Surface: Noticeable circulation grime consistent with age Stains: Light discoloration typical for the issue Tears: No significant edge or internal tears observed Pinholes: None visible Writing: No graffiti or writing Colors: Ink remains clear and identifiable; reverse green is still present, though muted Overall Impression: A solid circulated example with strong design visibility and collector appeal
