Napoleon Crossing the Alps (also known as Napoleon at the Saint-Bernard Pass or Bonaparte Crossing the Alps) is the title given to five versions of an oil on canvas equestrian portrait painted by the French artist Jacques-Louis David which were originally commissioned by the Spanish Ambassador to France. Like the paintings, this bronze shows an idealized view of the real crossing that Napoleon’s army made through the St. Bernard Pass in 1800, which enabled the French to surprise the Austrian army and win victory at the Battle of Marengo in June of 1800. As in David’s paintings, this bronze references Hannibal (Annibal), the great Carthaginian general who marched into the Italian peninsula during the Second Punic War and won a great battle against the Romans. Napoleon was known to have quoted Hannibal and likened his attack on the Austrians to Hannibal attack upon the Romans. This sculpture was cast using the Lost Wax Method and has a brown patina and is mounted on a marble base. Dimensions: Height 14 X Width 15 inches. Weight: 22 LBS.
Size: 5x5x12
