Lot Details
This sculpture of this medium size owl is scary but amazingly stunning with its owl wings spread fully as is he just landed on this broken tree trunk. The owl has large downward-facing eyes, a hawk like beak and a flat face, and his conspicuous circle of feathers are beautiful. Most birds of prey sport eyes on the sides of their heads, but the stereoscopic nature of the owl forward facing eyes permits the greater sense of depth perception necessary for low-light hunting. Their large eyes are fixed in their sockets as are those of other birds so they must turn their entire head to change views. Owls can rotate their heads and necks as much as 270 degrees in either direction. As owls are farsighted, they are unable to see clearly anything within a few centimeters of their eyes. Caught prey can be felt by owls with the use of filo plumes small hair like feathers on the beak and feet that act as feelers. Their far vision, particularly in low light, is exceptionally good. The owl was cast using the archaic method of lost wax casting and stained with a brown patina finish for perpetuation. The bronze sculpture was rests upon a marble base. Bronze Dimensions with Marble Base: Height 12 X Width 10 inches. Weight: 8 LBS.
