This figurine is a fabulous depiction of a Greek Sphinx. The Sphinx is said to have guarded the entrance to the Greek city of Thebes, and to have asked a riddle of travelers to allow them passage. In Greek mythology, a sphinx is represented as a monster with a head and breasts of a woman, the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and a serpent-headed tail. The sphinx was the emblem of the ancient city-state of Chios and appeared on seals and the obverse side of coins from the sixth century BC until the third century AD. The Sphinx was a terrible monster with a fondness for riddles. She asked a question of everyone who passed. She strangled and devoured anyone unable to answer. This bronze sculpture was cast using the lost wax method. Dimensions: Height 9 X Width 8 inches. Weight: 10 LBS.
